Your GPSS Weekly Announcements

Esteemed Jeeps,

Commercials for the Grammys during the NFL playoffs are not usually my primary source for philosophical inspiration, but given that this was indeed the case this week, I pose to you two questions as fodder for weekly discussion, debate and haterade:

  1. Path dependency: would the Foo Fighters be anywhere near as popular/successful as they are today if not for Dave Grohl’s earlier role in Nirvana?
  2. Are there any other instances of a band achieving massive commercial success, proceeding to lose their iconic band leader, and having another band member form a new band which also went on to achieve mainstream commercial success?

Food for thought, fodder for chatter.  Now, on to the announcements!

HAVEN Spanish Speakers Needed

Do you speak Spanish? HAVEN needs your help in caring for our patients!

The HAVEN Free Clinic is a free primary care clinic run by students from the Yale University health professional schools. The clinic serves patients who are adults (age 18-65), completely uninsured, and who live in the Fair Haven neighborhood. The vast majority of our patients are of Latino heritage who don't speak English, and whose only source of health care is this clinic. In order to offer great quality care, we need to communicate effectively with our patients, so interpreters play a MAJOR role.

We are currently looking for fluent Spanish-speakers that would like to volunteer as interpreters at HAVEN Free Clinic for the term. Volunteers are scheduled depending on their availability, but usually around 5 times during the term.

Below is the link to the application which will be due WednesdayJanuary 18th, 2012 at 11:59pm for the Interpreter volunteer positions for this upcoming Spring Term (Feb 11 - June 2).

Friday Jan. 20th & Saturday Jan. 21st, 8pm & 11pm

"There is a place between civilization and wilderness, where an alternative community has set down roots and use of the past tense has been outlawed. It is a society of the foreign and forgotten, the lost and the seeking, where guitars play stories people don't speak about. Today, someone new arrives and she's asking the wrong questions. Enter a haunting, a hidden woodland community of memories and mysteries, strange humor, complicated beauty, private stories and live music"

Veggie Dinner Kickoff Banquet

As you stumble back into the cold contemplation of academia from your vacations afar and near, I'm pretty sure the last thing you want to do is cook for yourself. That’s why we have Veggie Dinner. Our friends at the Forestry School started Veggie Dinner several years ago as a way to enjoy good food with great company and with minimal effort. In exchange for agreeing to cook one meal a semester with one or two friends, you can attend one dinner hosted by another member each week. If you were part of the great tradition last semester and want to stay a member, your membership will remain active so you don’t have to sign up again. Full details to follow, a kickoff banquet will be held on January 24th at 7:00 PM in Bowers Auditorium (Sage Hall 205 Prospect St.) and a sign up will be circulated in the coming weeks.

SOM Behavioral Lab Research Listserve

Every year, researchers at the Yale School of Management conduct hundreds of studies that require people like you to participate. The Yale SOM Behavioral Lab wants to offer you the opportunity to participate in such studies, for cash! Compensation is typically $5 but is sometimes more than that, and the studies generally take around 30 minutes to complete. The studies are simple, fun, quick, lucrative, and a contribution to important scholarship!

Recent studies have involved word problems, trivia questions, playing video games, watching films, etc. Studies are usually conducted at a convenient location near the center of Yale's campus, such as LC.

To join us for our $5 Friday survey sessions, please send an email to elab@yale.edu with the word "Subscribe" in the subject line. If you subscribe to our email list, we will contact you periodically to invite you to participate in upcoming studies.
