GPSS Weekly Announcements
Crowdsourcing Jeeps. This past weekend I escaped an awkward conversation at a bar piggyback-style. The individual to whom I was speaking wasn’t quite picking up my hints of wanting to leave the conversation, so I escaped the only way that seemed appropriate at the time: jumping on my friend Jose’s back and having him ferry me elsewhere.
Which leads me to the crowdsourcing question of the week: what’s your most memorable escape from an awkward/terrible conversation, GPSCY or otherwise? Top responses posted here next week.

Meantime
Tuesday, April 3rd @ GPSCY
No matter whether you’re YLS, FES, SFA, GSAS, SPH, YSM, SOM or even more impressive acronyms, you’ve got a story to tell and Meantime is THE venue to tell it. Come show off your work, have fun, and impress your fellow Elis. Meantime is your premiere platform to share current work, research, and stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with either. A slide presentation / performance event that uses events like Pecha Kucha and TED Talks as a model, Meantime aims to create an awareness of the work performed both within Yale’s graduate schools and throughout your personal experiences. Doing/done something cool? Want to show off your portfolio? Have a hilarious story about a lab experiment gone awry? Past presentations have ranged from D.I.Y. aerial photography in NYC to the story of a geophysical research cruise in the Pacific to the operation of GPSCY itself. Submit 4 sample slides and a synopsis of your proposed presentation to meantime.yale@gmail.com. Free beer and pizza while it lasts!

Healthcare Innovation Exchange Dinner
February 7th, 5:30pm, GPSCY
The ideas generator dinner is an exciting evening where attendees mingle informally among people with diverse skill sets but like-minded interests. Over the course of the night, ideas get shared, possible projects get brainstormed, and diverse teams get created to work on innovations in healthcare. Also in the mix, experienced mentors will be circulating and you will get the chance to meet some of Yale's biggest leaders in healthcare innovations one on one.
The venue will be organized in to broad categories of healthcare innovations (e.g. global health, medical devices, mobile/iPad medical apps), and students and mentors will informally mingle among them. Interspersed throughout the night, individuals who want to pitch an idea to the entire group will get a chance to do that as well.
By the end, we hope that several ideas will have been shared, connections made, and partnerships formed. We will also provide information on exciting challenges and competitions open to students and also resources available at Yale for developing an idea in to a realizable product/program. Please pass this along to anyone you know who is interested and RSVP at http://bit.ly/xt7B9L.
Dinner will be provided, please RSVP so we know how much food to order
If you can't make it but want to leave your thoughts, feel free to do that on the form as well.

Russian composer Alexander Scriabin caused a sensation in 1915, staging what was most likely the first multimedia concert in history. Designing a clavier à lumière to project colors onto the stage as it was played, Scriabin pioneered ideas relating colors and musical pitch. Nearly a century later, celebrated Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze and MacArthur Foundation Fellow Jennifer Tipton explore the legacy of this late Romantic composer through excerpts from his Poeme Languide in B Major and other works, including Feuillet d’Album in F-sharp Major, Opus Posthumous. This extravaganza of lush music and spectacular lightshow is truly "something unforgettable" (New York Press).
*Following each performance, there will be a talk-back with the pianist (Eteri Andjaparidze) and lighting designer (Jennifer Tipton).
PLUS a special colloquium, free and open to the public:
A forum for students working across artistic and academic disciplines that will focus on interpreting Alexander Scriabin, multi-disciplinary performance practices, and the concept of "Piano-Theater."
Thursday, February 9, 4:30 – 6pm
Whitney Humanities Center Auditorium, 53 Wall Street
*Followed at 6:30 by a free screening of "Prometheus - Poem of Fire" - a documentary and concert film featuring the music of Alexander Scriabin and the Yale Symphony Orchestra.
