GPSS is excited to announce a new initiative with New Haven Reads! New Haven Reads (http://newhavenreads.org/) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to improving the literacy of all age groups in New Haven. The organization was formed in 2001 in response to the finding that 2/3 of the adult population of New Haven reads under a 3rd grade level. New Haven Reads operates a free community book bank, and provide numerous tutoring opportunities for children grades K-12, including 1-on-1 weekly tutoring, group homework tables, math club, chess club, art club, and writing club.
There are currently over 250 children waiting to find a tutor, so GPSS is urgently looking for anyone who might be interested in getting involved with this fantastic organization. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities, so time commitments are flexible, ranging from a couple of dedicated hours a week to an hour every other week or so. We will also be having a book drive later this semester.
There will be an information session in the near future, so if you are at all interested or have any questions, please contact Community Service Chair Laura West (laura.west@yale.edu) or GPSS Senator Saga Blane (saga.blane@yale.edu) and provide your contact information and what type of commitment you’re interested in. We look forward to hearing from you!
